SWIMMING!
The sport of swimming has been a part of my life since I was 3 years old. And I can tell you there is NOTHING BUT BENEFITS from swimming. There absolutely no disadvantages. It is a low-impact exercise made for almost anyone – pregnant women, people with disabilities, those recovering from injury, the elderly, and those with weight limitations. They are different advantages to having swimming as a part of your physical activity. Swimming helps you in different aspects of your life physically, mentally, and your overall well being.
Regular Swimming does exercise the entire body. Your cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength endurance, flexibility, coordination, agility and balance are all strengthened. Without overworking the heart, it improves the body’s use of oxygen and increases lung function. Stimulates circulation, is fantastic for toning the upper arms, shoulders and legs, lowers blood pressure, and risk of injury. Another plus to swimming is that you don’t feel the sticky sweat and don’t get hot because your body is surrounded in cool water. You burn serious calories while swimming. Have you heard of the ridiculous diet of Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps because of how much he burns from swimming? Crazy right!?
I know while I swim laps I constantly think about anything and everything so it relaxes me and I focus on my stroke. This form of meditation can help you gain a feeling of well-being, and understanding of your surroundings. Exercise in water safely enables and assists you in the recovery of injuries, surgeries and illnesses and helps combat the aging process. It reduces stress levels and soothes the mind and body. Water supports and massages the body as you exercise. The cooling and massaging effects of exercising in the water make it a great place to workout without feeling tired. You develop a positive mental attitude, high self-esteem, and increased energy levels.
Plus it gives us an excuse to go bathing suit shopping! I know that’s one of my favorite parts of swimming, the bathing suits. Swimming and aquatic exercises allow you to meet new people, challenge or push each other and share the rewards of doing a swim workout together.
Why wouldn’t you want a toned body, overall well being, and a reduced stressed life?! We can all do better with less stress in our lives. It’s a fun activity and a great way to stay healthy. Not to mention swimming is a great skill to learn and maybe could save your life one day, or someone else’s. As I said theres only great lifelong benefits for you so I strongly encourage you start swimming and have fun!
